Statement on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

For Release

1/15/2018

Assemblyman Nicholas A. Chiaravalloti issued the following statement reflecting on diversity
and unity in advance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day:

“I am proud to represent Bayonne and Jersey City, A community rich in diversity and where our
strengths are built on welcoming and incorporating the new while being guided by our
traditions.”

As we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, we are reminded of the value of taking action
and speaking out against injustice. It is how every city, state and nation recognizes and respects
the intrinsic value of its people. There are many challenges facing our communities but, like Dr.
King, we must persevere and remind ourselves: “The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and
cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people.” Dr. Martin Luther King.

As I start my second term serving Hudson County in the state legislature, I will again be guided
by one of my favorite Dr. King quotes, “the ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in
moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and
controversy.”
